Our Friday nights usually involve going out to dinner, maybe to a bar, or staying in and watching a movie, but this week we decided to do something different - we went to the opera. Our brave friends Lindsey and Charlie accompanied us to this exciting new cultural experience. The opera was Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck sung by the Welsh National Opera. Knowing operas are not sung in English we thought we should stick to a story we knew. The opera was in fact sung in German which I don't believe most operas are. Yes, German is not the most romantic sounding language but hey, Hansel and Gretel is not a love story. The best part of the show (besides the singing of course) was the staging. Almost every scene involved real food being eaten and thrown around. By the end of the show your you're left with an urge to belt out the highest note you can, but then realize you are in a theater with hundreds of people who probably wouldn't appreciate it (but are most likely thinking about doing the same thing). So we all just applaud vigorously for 10 minutes.
